L-3 Communications ESSCO Awarded Major Contract for Redesign and Upgrade of The MIT Lincoln Laboratory Haystack Antenna Site
CONCORD, MA, June 14, 2004 L-3 Communications ESSCO (ESSCO), a division of L-3 Communications Corporation (NYSE:LLL), announced today that it was awarded a major development contract by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Lincoln Laboratory to design, fabricate and install a series of sophisticated technology upgrades to the 37-meter-diameter Haystack Radio Telescope located in Westford, Massachusetts. The large-scale contract, to be executed over the next three years, will include design, fabrication and field installation efforts.
MIT Lincoln Laboratory selected ESSCO for this effort after completion of a competitive study phase, where ESSCO provided a detailed technical approach and implementation plan for the program. The upgrade will extend the operating frequency range of the Haystack Radio Telescope from the microwave range, where it presently operates, up to the 90100 GHz band, and for use as a radiotelescope at frequencies up to 230 GHz.
“ ESSCO has a 40-year history of working with MIT Lincoln Laboratory on state-of-the-art high-performance antennas, radomes and radar systems, and we are honored to have been selected by Lincoln Laboratory to upgrade the Haystack Radio Telescope for use at short millimeter wavelengths,” said Dr. Apostle G. Cardiasmenos, president of ESSCO.
Created in 1951 as a federally funded research center of MIT, Lincoln Laboratory quickly established a reputation for pioneering advanced electronics in radar and air defense systems. The laboratory’s fundamental mission is to apply science and advanced technology to critical problems of national security.
ESSCO and its subsidiary, ESSCO Collins Limited (ECL), are the world’s largest producers of ground-based radomes and advanced large-aperture millimeter wave tracking antenna systems. Since its founding in 1961, ESSCO has produced more than 4,000 ground-based radomes and numerous high-performance large-aperture millimeter wave tracking antenna systems. These products have been installed worldwide in all environmental conditions. The performance of ESSCO antennas and radomes has been proven by actual field experience and extensive testing by the company and its customers.
